How late in spring do you scout?

Unread postby redsquirrel » Thu Mar 27, 2014 9:27 am

How long are you guys willing to push your scouting of new spots in the spring until you call it quits for the summer to keep your spots fresh? May? June 1? Green up?

Thanks in advance.

Once it gets to green to see well... But really I do some spot checking new bedding areas right up till the season. But the bulk are prior to green up

Usually until the end of turkey season which is mid-May here. Then I stick to the water fishing to stay away from poison ivy and ticks. But like BigHunt said, I definitely need to start shinning in the summer time.

Same here. Later I like to cruise offroad with my mountain bike and glass from a distance to keep tabs on what's going on plus shine all year round where I can legally. Scouting season never ends.

I keep scouting until the snow gets deep the following winter. Most of my high impact scouting is before August; however, I'll go high impact on new areas until the snow gets deep. I'll continue to run cameras in those areas that have potential.

I go until green up or the bugs tell me to stop. You can still be pretty productive with half green up but once things fill in it gets pretty hard to find anything.

I do my scouting up until the leaves start showing good. I will then fresh the salt lick at the camp an hang a camera an leave it alone for a couple months.

I have plans for one more all day trip to Holla Bend NWR before leaves come out. Maybe this coming weekend. Going to hang one camera while I am there too. I will make a trip back to Holla Bend about once a month. Just a nice peaceful spot.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

I am always looking for bucks.

When the horse flies come out I am done. They are insane in some areas, takes the fun out of running trail cams at times.

Thanks guys. I like to try to really fine tune spots at this time time of the year. I will continue to scout through the summer because I have more time available but when I scout in the summer I am scouting new areas that I don't necessarily intend on hunting that fall. I may, but my main intention is to follow up on the best areas I found the next spring.
