Snow shoes for scouting?
Any one recommend a certain brand/type of snow shoe for scouting? Will be for mostly hill country and a small amount of cattail marshes. Any tips for a newbie to scouting with snow shoes?

Re: Snow shoes for scouting?
Tubbs makes a good snowshoe that can handle the terrain you described. Make sure the pivot point where the boot harness attaches to the snowshoe is a "strap loop" and not a bolt. You will destroy the bolt on your first heavy duty scouting mission. A fabric loop is very durable.
Make sure you get the proper size snowshoe for your weight. If you buy too small, you will be sinking into the snow too much, making more work for yourself. If you buy too big, you will lose ability to easily manuever through thick cover.
Don't buy the cheapest ones. A mid price range model will work well for scouting.

Next year? You don't have enough snow on the ground now?

I've had a set of red feather aluminums for quite a while (10 yrs, maybe), I've tried wooden ones also and personally no question go with aluminums. Put a lot of miles on them had not had a problem since though I see the pivot points are better on some newer models, like said in earlier post. Haven't been snowshoeing much this winter due to the amount of snow, but plan on trying them soon!

I used to trudge through the deep snow w/ snow shoes. With the time I have for scouting these days I wait until I can maximize my scouting efforts, which means waiting until the snow is gone. Hunt smarter, not harder. i have applied that to my scouting as well.

Good point! But if ya have time, a little hiking outside this time of year is great exercise too. The gym gets monotonous.
