Another recent thread discusses public vs private and the increased number of available beds on large public tracts. That is mainly what I hunt. I scout enough to have a couple dozen spots picked out. But let's say a guy has a need to hunt new ground without scouting. How do you pick a bed from the ten you might suspect on a topo? What specific characteristics make one point more attractive than another. Obviously wind direction and options for the buck as week as approach are taken into account. But with the many options available how does a guy pick a spot from a topo on say an out of state hunt and know he's going to be successful?

I always try and couple the topo with a good aerial. If I find good transition cover within proximity of an active food source, I'll try that spot first. Usually when I go in blind I set up knowing that I'll probably be somewhat out of range. Sometimes you get lucky sometimes not. You learn about an area after the first hunt though.

Based solely on topo, I believe you should look at the steepest points that cover the most wind directions including the predominant (or is it prevailing?) wind direction for time of year you will hunt it.

Farmland hills or bigwoods hills? If its farmland knowing what crops are most likely "in" right at the moment would be key. If not, as stated looking at an aerial as well and seeing what the surrounding cover looks like. In a lot of cases you may not kill the buck but after the first time but as you narrow it down you will still be in the game.

Because that is what dan says
Steep terrain generally offers security, improved visibility(from the beds) and less hunting pressure.
I don't hunt true 'hill country', but I hunt some ridge/hollow in NW PA. I can tell you that the big bucks really seem to be drawn to the steepest areas there.
