I've been trying to digest as much of the beastmode as I can the past week. Through everyone's posts, info, and pictures, plus Dan marking up one of mine, I think it's starting to make sense. My question is how to access the stand site close to the bed without alerting the buck. Assuming coming in from below or above (hill country) you're busted, I am guessing the best way is to come in crosswind to as close as you feel comfortable that you don't bump him? Am I on the right track here? Thanks, guys.

Re: Beast Newbie Question
One way is to be able to sit at the bed during your scouting of it and also pick your stand site.
Then you can sit at the bed and determine which direction and wind will allow you to get to the stand site. A just off wind can work well, one where the buck feels safe moving your way but cannot smell you until after you have a shot at him.
Glad to see you posting here and welcome.

Re: Beast Newbie Question
Have you purchased the Hillcountry and Marsh Bucks DVDs? Worth their weight in gold and do a great job of giving visual to most topics discussed here.
I think one thing most guys, myself included, kind of overlook in the beginning, is that it is very rare to setup with a shot right to the bed. You are trying to catch the buck as he stages using one of his exit trails. I know I was caught up in trying to figure out how to shoot every buck right in his bed that I found, trying to take out the guesswork of figuring out his exit trails and possibly missing a chance from choosing the wrong one. But the more bedding/staging areas you scout and setup on, the more you will find that this most times is a necessary evil.
Also, you can come from above in hill country, you would want to quarter into a 'just off' wind for the particular bed… I believe dan made an illustration of this, I will look for the thread…
Hunter entry and buck exit gets discussed and illustrated a bit here regarding wind direction for beds on points:

Re: Beast Newbie Question
I think the DVD's will answer your questions.... Get in the bed, see what the buck sees, think about what he can smell and hear. Look at the exit trail. How close can you get without being seen, smelt, or heard...? tHINK ABOUT WHEN AND WHY THE BUCK BEDS THERE. oN WHAT WIND?
Then.... Plan your entrance, tree, and day.
