snow depth where you hunt

Unread postby ihookem » Mon Feb 03, 2014 1:49 pm

I've been hearing a lot about the deep snow everywhere and how it is getting real bad in the northern regions.. We have 14-16" in S.E . Wis. How much snow where you hunt and is it getting bad? Any sign of dead deer in your area?

We have a couple feet on the ground... its crazy to walk
on cause we got 20 inches 2 weeks ago then rain then negative temps then another 10 inches on top of that so it has a layer of ice under the new snow n is tricky to walk on

Currently there is a light layer of 3 day old ice.

Snow maybe on Tuesday.

I went rabbit hunting yesterday, NE Iowa...on the north sides where it hasn't settled much it is 30" deep  Walking through that was WORK. Just a little ways south in east central iowa there is not much though - less than a foot most places.

On open ridge tops its less but most places in the timber has at least 18" although extreme south slopes have melted down quite a bit...a few farm fields are blown almost bare, thankfully for the turkeys and pheasants.

I am hoping the weather breaks soon...wildlife is going to be in trouble if it is still this way in a month.

I have no clue how you all deal with that much snow. 3-4" of snow almost shuts KC down. We are forecasted 8-12" right now its going to be a disaster.

Probably pushing 30 inches now, over time it does pack down a bit and the deer make their own trails but it sure isn't fun for them. Last year after we had that crazy spring I was scouting a swamp way up north. I thought I saw some check high rubs in the distance but when I got there the bark had been chewed off the trees. After further inspection the bark had been chew off hundreds to thousands of trees in this swamp over the winter. It was rabbit running on top of the chest high snow, a lot of the deer survived that mess but the population took a pretty big hit.

depends on where you are right now, our base is anywhere from 30" up to around 45" or so.
