What made you decide to buy a canoe?

I assume to eliminate the need to take a second yak to get the deer out...

Correct... But, there are still some tight canals, ditches, and portages I need to use the kayak on if I hunt. So both will get use.

No... I tow another kayak or rubber raft for retrieval.

Has anyone tried wrapping a pfd (or 2) around a deer to float it out? May be able to avoid hauling around a 2nd kayak or raft?

This can be done without a PFD. However, I assume using a yak cuts down on the drag a lot. Plus, I'm sure there is a fair amount of travel in skinny water which benefits keeping the load high and dry.

That's for sure a great way to make it a real adventure.
Here in France it's impossible (no public hunt...).
The USA offer so much possibility.
You all have a fantastic chance!

The Des Moines river was no joke. I drug my yak more than I paddled it. I've also witnessed that pirogue navigate some SE LA rapids!!!!

Great info. Just one thought though. If the waters not too rough why bring in a 2nd kayak or even load the deer on the kayak. Even gutted deer in the fall are extremely bouyant, because of their hollow hair. I've pulled deer while wading accross rivers a few times. They only displace 2"-3" of water.

The hull weighs 80 pounds I think. But it is super stable and can float in 5 inches of water. Also can carry two hunters and gear

I have a cheap 2 person foot pump inflatable raft to tow behind my kayak if there is not enough room on it. I think it was $19 on amazon prime. Seems to do the trick and I can just leave it packed in the kayak when I don't need it.
