Hunting a Unique Public Land Opportunity...PLEASE HELP!!!!

Unread postby psubowhunter54 » Fri Jan 03, 2014 6:28 pm

Presque Isle State Park is a park in Erie, PA, and is open during all archery seasons. It has a regulated 3 day hunt with slug guns and muzzelloaders, and is open for flintlock from Jan 2nd to Jan 12th. Do you have any tips on where or how to start hunting this tract? It is almost completely flat, and much of it is briars and marsh. These are the best maps I could find, the topos had to be purchased and as a poor college student about to start my spring semester, books are top priority. There are lots of people who bike, hike, and walk dogs down here, but there are also some beautiful bucks, so I'm not sure how that will affect deer behavior. Thanks!

Are you archery hunting all season or just the mz 3 day hunt? I've had special draw hunts in s.p. and it can be challenging to get up to speed with activity. Good luck.

Just archery, but PA late archery coincides with flintlock, which are now both open on the park and statewide.

Looks like a strip of high ground between Fisher road and long pond. Also lots of points jutting out into big pond and long pond.

Walk the transition lines around those marshes. Check all the secluded high ground as well. That place should not be tough to figure out with boots on the ground. I see several small 'islands' of trees that look promising.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Here is a great looking area that caught my eye. I put red dots where there are likely buck beds. Yellow dots are possible hunting positions. If your muzzle loader hunting I would still hunt up to these beds, if bow hunting I would sit along the swamp edges and get them as they leave in the evening.

It went well, just not as well as it could have haha I'll be back in there next year with a lot more info on the land. This was a spur of the moment thing, so hopefully there will be some meat in the freezer next season from this plot.
