Unread postby Czabs » Sat Dec 14, 2013 2:36 pm

Plan on scouting new piece Sunday for this year yet and for future use. Would you wait to go bust everything up and scout the perimeter for big buck sign or would u go in and figure everything out now and hunt it the following week. Im afraid if i stink up the area thatll ruin my chance for success yet thia yr. Thoughts?

Its an Andrea expression.

If he knows the layout and bedding he goes and grabs the brass ring.

A brass ring is a small grabbable ring that a dispenser presents to a carousel rider during the course of a ride. Usually there are a large number of iron rings and one brass one, or just a few. It takes some dexterity to grab a ring from the dispenser as the carousel rotates. The iron rings can be tossed at a target as an amusement. Typically, getting the brass ring gets the rider some sort of prize when presented to the operator. The prize often is a free repeat ride. The phrase to grab the brass ring is derived from this device.

"Grabbing the brass ring" or getting a "shot at the brass ring" also means striving for the highest prize, or living life to the fullest. It is not clear when the phrase came into wide use but has been found in dictionaries as far back as the late 19th century

After the gun seasons the spot was likely pounded already so you can't do much more damage by diving in to check it out but If I had a few days and a buck tag in my hand I would cyber scout, slip in a likely spot with fresh sign and give it one good hunt first. Scouting now this late will run an already edgy buck out for quite some time. A surprise attack will be much better.

I was going to go shining tonight to find out, but my spotlight miracously disapeared.

I would walk the perimeter... This time of year with snow on the ground scouting from a distance is easy. Do some walking in wide circles, or better yet some glassing, or both.
Late season is about as good as it gets for patterning deer. The only down side is short days and lost ambition.

I like to dive in. I would speed scout the food sources, funnels etc just to get a feel for the land. If you are gun hunting, I would play the wind and try my hand at slipping into some bedding areas and catching a buck in his bed, if he bumps I would stay put and see if he returns.

If you don't dive in and you don't score while playing it safe you are now in the same boat on your next trip...

I hunt a lot of different ground, so I don't mind burning bridges to gain intel or if I bump a buck to another hunter. There is more land and bucks than I could ever have time to hunt...

I agree with this. I walked a bunch today to check some spots. For me it is important to check spots for sign this time of year. A lot of the spots I thought would of had sign right now didn't have a single track in them, only one spot I suspected would be good actually was. Once I found the areas they were using I found good sign. My thought is their isn't much time left so you better be where they are or you don't have a chance.

Not as aggressive as most others, I like the low impact approach. Glass from afar, and move in.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I'd say go in scouting/hunting and setup if you find the goods, coming back in a week probably isn't going to work. A little ground work around the perimeter is a good idea too.

Went around the perimeter, didn't find squat. I found one good set of tracks coming from a bedding area out in the cattails, I setup a trail cam and sticnipic but then saw foot tracks so took it down. Drove to another piece..and same thing. More foot tracks than deer tracks.
