Video: Install USGS 2D and 3D topo maps into Google Earth

Here's a video on integrating USGS 2D and 3D topo maps into Google Earth.

After they're integrated, you can toggle the topo maps on/off. This allows you to store waypoints and tracks in one app (Google Earth) and have the waypoints and tracks available in your aerials and your USGS topos.

I'm sure plenty of folks have seen this. But here's an instructional video and links to the software (Google Earth installation file, and the KML file).

Download and Install Google Earth

Go to this page to get the "KML" file

Then just follow the directions on the video. Pretty awesome for free.

Also, you can move your own KML file (containing your own waypoints and tracks) to and from your handheld device app (e.g. "Backcountry Navigator" for Android, or various apps on the other device OS's). You just need to keep straight which copy of the KML file has your newest tracks and waypoints when swapping back and forth between Google Earth and your handheld device app.

It's pretty cool. Here's a snap of my screen showing a 3D topo overlaying the satellite imagery. Expand the pic for a better look. Of course on the Earth app you can drill way down too.
