Went scouting with a duck hunter today

Unread postby Uncle Lou » Fri Sep 06, 2013 11:46 am

We were on some public in Highland Michigan. He was looking for access to some ponds and I was keyed on the lowland swamp, thickets, marsh, ponds. Saw a lot I liked, and was even scouting public hunter access and finding some stands.

It was fun. Didn't find any beds bud didn't venture into where I plan to go once season starts. Found many more acres to do my archery season creeping around the junk.

He has more to show me. I think I will see where else he takes me.

Anyone else have any duck hunter friends, it may pay off to go scout with them

I used to know a duck hunter through a mutual friend. He said he saw nice bucks all the time. Not sure his idea of a nice buck is the same as mine, and that was years ago. Cool you got out, highland public is halfway between us.

You have the right idea Lou. Bucks and ducks go together quite well. I hunt in marshes among ducks all the time and not uncommon to have them paddling right under my tree. Usually the biggest bucks I see ever year are living in duck habitat that other guys would never even consider hunting because the amount of water. Big bucks love water because they know predators will rarely follow them through it and hunting pressure is almost zero.

Indeed. My best buck to hunt this year in Central WI is backed up against a beaver pond loaded with woodies.

Solid advice Lou, hard core buck hunters are similar to hard core duck hunters. There is no lack of effort to get out and hunt plus scouting and being in the right place at the right time are key.
