05-12-13 Hill Country Scouting

Unread postby AC Rider » Mon May 13, 2013 8:47 am

I've got to give Dan credit where credit is due... Dan marked potential beds on my lease. Today I found beds on two of the three ridge points I had time to check. Both beds were at 1100 feet and almost exactly where Dan said they might be. HUGE thanks Dan!
Each bed was by itself but rubs going to and coming from them were non-existant. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Here are pics of the beds. It doesn't show well but they both are worn into the ground with hair in them.

This three-finger track was in it.

Here's the second bed.

Usually means a low number of bucks in my opinion... No competition for those beds... Are there any big rubs anywhere on the property?

Interesting Greg... I have some great beds that produce big bucks yearly that also lack in rubs... One of them has heavy big rubs coming to the bedding area, but they stop a hundred yards away.

Those beds are on the west side of the main ridge. There is a lot more buck sign on the east side. Maybe they just done spend as much time there because east winds aren't as prevalent???

I have quite a few beds that don't have rubs leading right to the bed. However, they are usually within 75 yards on either the bucks entrance or exit trail. My best one is a bed I observed the buck come in and bed at; I went back after season and there is one solitary rub on a creek he crosses to get to that bed. It's over a 100 yards from his bedding spot.

That makes me feel better. I kinda jumped from one ridge to the next for the sake of time. There probably is a rub or two within 100 yards or so.

Impressive isn't it? He did the same for us. I was amazed at how accurately he nailed it. It was a huge learning experience and kind of brought it together for us.

We found the same thing on some of the beds we found this year. We did find rubs farther away though and several good rubs in the area.

A couple of the beds had rubs all around them and right next to the bed also. Those were the best used beds we found.
