Is it normal for a deer to lose this much hair in it's bed?

Unread postby Dewey » Mon Apr 08, 2013 7:11 am

I saw this from a distance and assumed I found a carcass but instead found a bed. Seems like an awful lot of hair and can't recall ever finding this much in a bed. :?

It's pretty obvious a deer was bedded here quite a bit because the brush is browsed pretty heavily.

Gonna keep looking around and see what else I can find.

That looks like a dead deer to me. I find those kinds of hair at kill spots.

I saw something similar on Friday at the spot where the predators killed that yearling. There was remanence of the guts and some bones though. In your pic, I don't see any. They must have cleaned up well???

Still looking but not one bit of sign other than hair. I would expect to at least find some bones. Not far from the bed I just bumped a deer that bounded along the island/cattail transition.

After looking closer at the hair it appears to be only the thick winter coat that was shed. Pretty sure that is exactly what I found but it puzzled me because I have never seen that much around here before.

Looks a little too heavy to be normal... But they do loose a lot of hair at this stage of spring.

Looks like too much hair for just shedding. They usually drop their hair in the bed and as they are walking. My guess is dead deer.

Do you have any white deer in the area? I had a white buck bedding on my property for a few years, his beds looked exactly like that in spring scouting after shedding.

I have seen them loose hair in clumps but nothing like that and still be alive. My guess is a coyote, raccoon, hawk or some other animal carried a piece of hide from a dead deer to that spot and everything got eaten eventually but the hair. Dead deer might be a few hundred yards away. What did the roots of the hair look like. Any small trace of skin attached?

No sign of any flesh on the hair at all and clean as can be. This hair was found in the middle of an island surrounded by cattails. I searched the whole island and surrounding cattails but didn't find anything suggesting a deer kill.

I remember somebody else posting quite awhile back that had a very similar pic in a known buck bed but can't remember who it was. I'm gonna do some searching of the posts and see what I can find.

I found a pile of hair just like that today, I didnt take a picture though. i assumed it was where a deer died and maybe the carcass got dragged away, didnt really give it too much thought at the time. I jumped one deer and went to look at the bed, it was a doe judging by the tracks, and found some hair in the bed. but not nearly that much hair!
