Strangest place you have found a buck bed?
We have all found buck beds in some pretty strange places but when you look closer and put the complete picture together the buck actually bedded in a very smart position.
Today driving on my way to work reminded me of such a place. For quite a few years now on days when the wind is out of the west or northwest I see a bedded buck right off the freeway about 50 yards or so. As I checked it out today when I drove by there he was plain as day bedded and very easy to see with the snow on the hillside!
The bed is located 1/3 of the way down a ridge in a classic thermal tunnel location with farm land at the top of the ridge. Pretty cool to see and actually quite predictable when the wind is right. The bad thing is this is private land that I cannot hunt but still cool to see a buck that is perfectly at ease with heavy traffic zooming past him at 70+ mph.
This buck knows visually that nothing will get at him from the freeway and anything from behind is picked up in the thermal tunnel. The woods he is bedded in is only a few acres and is basically a steep wooded hill off the highway that feeds down into a small marsh for escape cover if needed.
Lets here some other stories like this. I find this very interesting! This can really open up our eyes to spots I'm sure we all overlook.

Re: Strangest place you have found a buck bed?
I posted this in another post. Essentially, it's about a buck bed I found in the middle of a giant pasture. I wasn't expecting a buck to be in that area and it changed how i looked at buck beds forever.
One year while I was gun hunting out in Kansas, I decided to hunt this farm that was mostly a giant pasture with rolling hills. This place was 640 acres with very little cover. It was fairly overlooked by most of the people who had permission to hunt there. It was overlooked by me until one day in particular...I remember being about a mile from any gravel road and I remember coming up on a patch of honeylocust brush. In addition, the farmer had bulldozed these trees into a big pile on the upper end of this patch of brush. I remember saying this looks pretty good; all of a sudden the wind switched and atleast 20 deer come running out of this patch of brush. One of which was a buck in the 150 to 160 range! I was like wow
I continued my hunt on another bigger chunk of woods to the south of that location and never seen much else that morning. On the way back to the truck that morning, I decided to go over to my little patch of brush on that hill again. I was thinking maybe there might be something else that didn't get up the first time I came by there....I stood at the top of this little hill and looked down on the edges of the brush wondering if I should walk in there. From my point of view, I couldn't see much so I jumped up on one of those honeylocust trees and peered down into the thick stuff. All of a sudden, I heard sticks crashing and something running from me about 10 yards away One of the biggest whitetails I have ever seen in my life had got up not 10 yards from me!!! That giant buck ran right on the edge of this thick patch of brush until he hit a canal and stayed low while he was running away (All of the deer from earlier in the morning ran up on the hills and exposed themselves to be shot. This buck had played this game before...) I'll never forget that experience or buck for the rest of my life. He was a true B/C probably mid 180s if I had to guess.
Later that spring, I went back to scout that little obscure piece of brush out in the middle of the pasture. I found his bed and sat in it for 20-30 minutes. It was funny because that old buck had not only smelled me come in to that area, he could also see where I was standing. Even when all of the other deer got up and ran off he stayed confidently in his bed. However, I must have got a little to close for comfort the second time I visited that brush patch...
I learned a lot from this deer and it kinda opened my eyes up to obscure bedding spots. From now on these are the spots I look for first when I scout a piece of ground
If you look in the Buck Bed pics thread you can see a pic of his bed and his view from the bed. It's like the second or third pick with the thick growing locust trees in the background.

Yes. Its on the point of a remote island. If you look from the bucks point of view he can see over the cattails from the elevated position. We discovered that bed while on the scouting workshop. It will be interesting to see if it keeps getting used.

I don't remember for sure Dan, but didn't you try to put a camera on it last year, and it came up empty? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. It would be a cool spot to try a camera, but maybe there is not much around it for mounting a camera.

In the crotch of a fallen willow... Buck had to climb up about 3 feet into the tree. It had a perfect spot in the tree and put him up high enough to see over the cattails.

Reminds me of this one I found a few months ago. At first I thought no way it’s a bed but tracks led right to it and there was hair on top.

Re: Strangest place you have found a buck bed?
Those bucks get creative some times.
Like Dan I found a crotch of two trees that a buck used.
It had minor rubbing to provide the evidence.
My scouting was leeward on hilly terrain without much cover. But it was a spot the bucks wanted to be during prime time. They were almost within eyesight of doe bedding /thick cover. The does were upwind for common rut wind and he would watch and smell enough that a tree crotch was good enough cover.

You don't have to be the best, just do your best.

I saw one in the cloverleaf of a couple major interstates.
I also found one this spring right next to an old farm dump ground...there were old glass bottles, etc right next to the beds.

I've seen something similar to this, yet very different. Instead of a tree crotch it was a flat moss covered Boulder. And instead of seeing over cattails it was a sea of mountain laurel. This bed was on a very broad mountain top, every sappling without reach of the boulder was rubbed, and it had beds facing multiple directions for different winds.
