Iowa Scouting Trip.

Unread postby westmibow » Sat Mar 16, 2013 11:40 am

I was able to scout some public areas in Iowa this past Thurs. I have been to one of these areas before and was forced to go to another area because of flooding. I was hoping to find some sheds but they still have a good big of snow especially in the woods. Anyway below are some pictures of what I found.

The most exciting thing I found was a bedding area of a mature buck. It really is one of those spots that you just know its good. In fact when I came up on it I remember stopping and looking really good thinking this is a good spot. Then I found the rubs pictured below.

This rub was on the fringe of the bedding area. Nothing to excited but it got my attention.

This is what I found in the bedding area. You can see how big of a tree this is by me being next to it. Also it looks like its been rubbed for years, which tells me this spot gets used over and over.

This was exciting enough but under the same tree about 10' away was his bed.
Here is a picture of the trunk he had rubbed and the bed in the back ground.

What this is is a patch of pines at the end of a ridge, and 3/4 of the way up. It by all definitions is a really good spot. No surprise to me it is as far away from the parking areas you can get and I had to cross 2 creek/rivers to get to it. That was an adventure in itself with how high the water was.

Here is a picture of the bedding area looking up the ridge.

I really wish there wasn't so much snow on the ground I might of stood a chance of finding his sheds but you can see how much snow there was in the pictures.

Here are some more pictures of the rest of my trip. I also found a dead buck probably EHD it was by water.

All in all a very productive trip considering I only had a day to do my scouting and put in just over 11 miles so I feel good about it.

Looks good.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

That looks like an old railroad grade running through there

That could be an old railroad bed. I call it a dike but its possible it once was that. There are a few dikes around there but not near as wide so you are probably correct. It goes in between a couple of oxbows at one point and makes an amazing funnel. I found that last year. This year you can see the flood plain on both sides was flooded so the deer weren't really back in there yet.

I was in NE area. The snow was taking a big hit the day I was there it was in the 40's but its hard to say. If its in the woods its going to take a while for it to melt.
