Saturday scouting pic

Unread postby hunter_mike » Tue Feb 12, 2013 1:53 pm

Not really a new topic but I thought this picture I took on saturday was kinda cool because it illustrates a lot. You can see the buck's walking tracks (which turned out to be a nice 8 pointer with headgear still on) heading right into his bed. You can pretty much see where he was bedding ahead in the tag alders, and the picture shows the transition edge, right where you would expect to find a bed. To the left of the walking tracks you can see his running tracks from after I kicked him up. I would have to believe that it is no coincidence that he ran out on the exact same path that he used to enter the bedding area. Gotta come back when the snow's gone to decide if this bedding area is used in the fall or not but if I hunt it I will set up within shooting distance of this trail.

Good find! I've found a lot of beds where I'll have to recheck come spring to determine whether or not they are winter only beds.

Yes it was a pretty productive day. Years past, i woulda never been out scouting this time of year but its so much fun now that i know what im looking for instead of just wandering around following deer trails.

Is there any way Mike you can set up right on that transition or is the bed right on it? I would be curious after snowmelt to see if there is an old bed from last fall near there.

Yup i hear ya. After reading the other thread on here about winter vs summer beds im gonna be rechecking a few spots . But at least we are out there still finding beds, allowing ourselves to the most out of that valuable springtime scouting.

He was bedded about 30 yards from the transition line in the tag alders. From his bed he could see partially into the open timber where i was standing When i took the pic so i might have to stay way back from the bed when setting up. There were also multiple beds in this small spot where he could see different portions of the open timber so setting up on the transition could be tough without gettin spotted.

When i go back this spring, might try to figure out which way he would face based on wind direction since dan always says they face downwind when bedded

How did he enter his bed? Did he walk straight in, or try to wind his bed first? Where was the wind from, over his back? Intresting he ran out the same way after watching you walk in on him. Sorry for the questions, I just love dissecting situations like this.

Your questions help me understand the situation just as much as they help you. When I took this picture i am facing NW and pretty much into the wind. However when I kicked him up I was walking down the transition line from right to left across the picture which is shown by the yellow line. When I crossed his track, I followed it into the brush and jumped him up when I got to the yellow X.

He pretty much walked straight in to the bedding area but must have circled around to watch his back track. When he jumped up, I would have had a hard time getting a shot off at him even with a rifle because there was a lot of brush between me and him. The red line is his path. Solid red is entry and dashed red is his escape.

I will revive this post with more pics, potential tree set ups and results when I hopefully get back there when the snow melts.

Very good post, I also am curious to see if you find fall bedding sign. I jumped a good buck out of his bed this fall that was on a transition of tag alders just like this. If there is any kind of a decent deer population there I wouldn't be surprised to find fall bedding.
