Marsh/woods scout today 2/6/13

Unread postby BigHills BuckHunter » Thu Feb 07, 2013 1:51 pm

I first wanted to check out a crick bottom/marsh below my uncles house. I found some very tall rubs in there some of the tallest Ive seen in particular one. Im pretty sure I know who made. I spotlighted him there bedding last fall and shot at him close to there with gun.

I found a trail that connected two foodsources. I found a good set of buck tracks on it and set up a trail camera in a small pinch point where there is a crick jump.

In the woods I found a buck track after 20 yards of walking from my 4wheeler. I tracked it back to its bed and found 3 other bucks bedded with him. They are bedded on a point that is used in fall.

The interesting observation I made is that they bedded higher on the point in the winter than in fall. But when they got up from their beds they walked down to the 2/3 elevation and then followed the contour line which I thought was cool to see. I didnt kick them up so they were on a natural pattern.

Here are the 2 biggest beds one looking one way and the other looking the opposite direction. The other 2 beds were positioned the same but 10 yards higher looking for danger in both directions.

The buck has a good track:

I cut this track further along which is very easy to recognize compared to others. Couldnt find his bed.

Here is a buck bed thats close to a rub on the edge of a ridgetop cut cornfield.

I kicked up a group of deer and saw 2 half rack bucks take off. Both bucks looked like a 2 or 3 yr old. One had his left antler and the other had right antler lost. I looked for the antlers but with the snow its tough lookin. Overall a good scout/shed hunt today.

Thanks for sharing the scouting outing.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

That's awesome can't beat a good scouting trip. Sounds and looks like you might be able to get your hands on some sheds also. Good Luck and great post!!

Ive got 2 sets of bucks beds pinned down. A total of 8 bucks so hopefully I can find their sheds. The problem is that some havnt dropped yet and the snow which is at about 8 inches in some spots. Cant wait till march.

I scout a lot because not only do I learn I get to spend time in the woods and get away from the craziness of the world.

Best scouting will be in between last snow melt and green up to see the fall beds.
