One less buck for next year.

Unread postby Jackson Marsh » Sun Feb 03, 2013 10:14 am

Walked a few miles in the marsh today, and found this buck dead in the middle of the cattails.

When I reached the island I followed the edge and on the far SW edge (NW Wind) I kicked out four antlerless deer. I got a good look at them as they headed across the cattails, no antlers. I found where they were bedding (four beds in a circle). Here are two of the beds top and bottom of the pic.

I definitely thought does, but I found this very fresh track in one of the beds (one of the four beds was much larger too)

I finished circling the island and jumped one more deer, it was a doe.

Very strange, I kept breaking through the ice in the cattails, it has been very cold the last few days and it was 5-8 degrees when I was scouting. The larger areas of water (ditches and ponds) were frozen solid, but in the cattails every so often I would break through the ice. I found two options on the island I can hunt, the far south end I can get in a tree. The north end I will have to hunt in the cattails.

Cold out, but nice and sunny. Not a bad way to spend a few hours.

EHD in your area?
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Too bad about the buck.

Bad ice in cattails is pretty common because the decaying plant matter generates some heat. The warm up we recently had and pretty heavy rain only made it worse.

Could be? I was thinking more of a bow or gun kill, but there was EHD not to far away.

I've noticed this in the past, wasn't aware it was due to decaying plant matter, good to know. It has been dang cold the last few days, I wonder how much heat gets kicked out?

One of those take the good with the bad situations. Looks like you found a good spot for next season. Especially since you found one with a big set of tracks

Might be a good area, time will tell. One thing I've learned is you have to hunt it to find out.
