Went out yesterday for a walk in the marsh checking things out. Pretty much just followed deer tracks around figuring out how they are traveling thru the area. It was a nice day and felt good to get out and stretch my legs a little. Still some pretty deep snow over knee deep in some spots but overall much easier getting around. I covered just over 6 miles according to my GPS.
Didn't come across to many fresh beds. This was the best one I found. Most of the other older ones in the area are still under the snow and not recently used.
It was tucked in by this downed tree.
Found some huge tracks. I know they are older and somewhat degraded from the thaw but compared to other tracks that were about the same age the were much larger and no doubt from a mature buck.
Not much food out there right now but one thing they are feeding hard on right now are the tops on downed trees from the blizzard.
Good to see the snowmelt is filling the marsh back up again. Been the driest year on record out there.
This is the only rub I took a picture of.
Had a few interesting finds.....................
Haven't figured out what made this track. Any ideas? It is about 2" wide.
Found this cool eagle nest. She was circling above me when I took this picture. Looked like maybe a Golden Eagle? Not sure on that though. All I know is the nest was huge!
Closer to public access I found some old hunter sign. Check out this crude stand. Looked like somebody was sitting way up in the crotch of the tree and were resting their feet on a platform that was zip tied to the tree!
Found this old homemade wooden stand. So anybody think this stand is TMA approved?
Today was more a day of just exploring. Walked thru a bunch of bedding areas I was treading lightly around all season. Figured now was a good time to dive in and check them out but it didn't look like any were being used recently. Every year I am amazed following tracks in the marsh by how far they just keep wandering in cattails. Following them a mile or more was not out of the question and they just keep going without bedding. Not sure why they just keep heading out into miles of nothing but cattails this time of the year.
Looking forward to the rest of the scouting season. Hope to get out every weekend from now till green up.

Cool trip.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: 1-12-13 scouting trip
Thanks for posting. I always enjoy when people put up scouting posts like this. I found the same type of track today that you found with the claws and big 2" wide track and from what I can tell off of a google image search its a badger track! surprising since I personally have never seen one anywhere near the area that I found mine today.
I have no idea what those people using those homemade stands were thinking! Thatts some redneck engineering at its finest!

Cool post Dewey. I believe those are badger tracks. I have 2 badger dens on my land and those tracks look very very similar.

Re: 1-12-13 scouting trip
I don't think it was a beaver. The track was found in marsh grass at least a 1/2 mile from any water and there were no drag marks in the snow.
These are beaver tracks in snow.
