Bed question

Unread postby Zap » Mon May 24, 2010 4:17 am

Yesterday I found three beds.
2 about 30 yards apart and the third maybe 80 yards from the second one.

All on a north facing point.

All at the same elevation, and connected by a faint trail with big tracks.

I assume a buck that switches beds with a change in the wind.

The question is:
The beds were round. All 3.
My thought was that this particular deer likes to curl up.

Any ideas on this?

Not sure Marty... I have seen many over size ( or round ) beds as well as the the straight beds. Could be an individual bucks trait, or maybe that bed gets used more. Good question.

Thanks, Dan.
I was sad to read about the finger.
At least he did not lose it.

Anyway I had checked this north facing point when there was snow on the ground, and again after it melted.
Nada, zippo, zilch for beds.
A few trails but no beds.

Went back yesterday and found a doe bedding area on the point.
Looked around more and found the three larger beds.

The beds were not that hard to see with the vegetation up, but you had to be close.

I say the 1/3 rule is good stuff. :D

Nothing is 100%, but for me to be able to look at topo and then go pretty much directely to bedding, in a place that is unfarmiliar is awesome.

I plan to keep looking all summer.

Maybe that buck likes to change positions to look different directions while in that spot for some reason? Image Thereby making the bed round.
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Marty,

You sure they were buck beds?
