Uncle Lou - Frederick is more of Western MD - it sits right up against the Appalacian mountains. There are a ton of deer out there though, they have all kinds of controlled hunts and management hunts to deal with overpopulation issues.

Here is an interesting bedding sequence. The other night it was really cool, under 80 degrees and overcast, and every time that happens the deer tend to bed out in the open fields. I saw these two bucks in the distance, the doe in the first picture tipped them off. I got a little closer to check it out and then noticed the one I could see clearly was passed out, eyes closed and all. After a couple deer started acting goofy, they standed up and I sneaked out.

I moved some stands/cameras yesterday during the rain and then went out in the evening to glass. I saw a couple bucks out of velvet. I didn't get any pictures of them but it's just a matter of time. This 10 is read to shed velvet - the antlers get a gray fuzz right before they shed. He is already growing his darker fall coat as well.

Looking good.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Season opens Friday. He is across the road from where I can hunt. There are a big bunch that cross every evening from the huntable ground to the big bean fields. I have yet to see him do it although I am relatively sure he will cross the street later in the year.

I will take luck over skill everytime. Luckily, I have had a lot more luck than skill over the years, and I hope it stays that way. Here are a couple more up and comers, probably some of the last bucks I will get in velvet. The little guy already shed velvet, but it's still hanging off.

Season opens up Friday. I will make my rounds tomorrow night and make my decision on where to go on Friday afternoon. Here are a few more from the other night, some in, some out of velvet.
