Re: Video on deer responses to cameras
Awesome video, thanks for sharing it. Describes precisely what Dan has said all along about, putting cameras into areas where deer don't expect human intrusion. But tolerate to a degree in food plots and fields.
Like Dan said, ever wonder why when you first put up a camera you get pics of a good buck right away. Then he disappears.
Really gets you thinking just how careful you need to be with camera placement.
Great video again. Thanks.

Good video JLH. I would agree about camera placement. They can do more harm than good if not careful.

Re: Video on deer responses to cameras
Think you could manipulate their movements by placing cameras in certain areas?? I bet it is possible that they might just change where they are moving slightly just to avoid the cameras. That could play a part in getting them where you want them. What do you think?

Camera or residual human scent?
What spooks the deer more?

Re: Video on deer responses to cameras
Great information, thanks for posting that!
I'm a bit surprised that even todays mini sized cameras were picked off visually by the deer. I like the scientific experiment with the dead camera still getting picked off by the deer.
I also like the fact that just mounting a camera 6 feet high essentially eliminates the deer seeing it.
I own the old reconyx cameras which are NOT mini sized at all. I have often wondered just how high I need to mount these large cameras. Certainly the lower you can set them the easier it is to set them.
After watching this video, I now know I need only carry 2 mini-sticks in order to set them above the visual field of the deer (8-9 feet high).
One thing I have learned about settting cameras high is that you need a STURDY, adjustable, easy to adjust, mounting system. Sturdy, because a 20lb racoon will definately find your camera and perch on it for several days in a row. I have found that TrailPod makes a good, sturdy, adjustable mount. A bit spendy though.
Video sure does give you more deer behavior information!

There is no doubt that residual human scent scares the deer more.
HOWEVER, the video gave an example of a deer reacting negatively to the camera 2 WEEKS after it was set. I believe that has to be a VISUAL reaction.
I know I will be setting all my camera sets up in a tree from now on.

I would think the human scent would be a bigger factor than a camera(at least after the human scent is gone after placing the cam.)
I do not think a deer would associate a camera with danger, unless it came across it before your scent was gone.I do not think a flash or blinking light would make them come unglued. It obviously can make them uncomfortable, but would they vacate an area or just alter their movement slightly to avoid it? We all know what happens when they come across our scent. Just like everything else, it is all in the right situation. Be interesting to see if you could do it though. I know some beds and exit routes I have found do not have a huntable tree within range. But if I could get them to walk 50 yards over, I would have a chance. I guess in all reality you could put anything foreign out there and they would likely avoid it for some time, but at least with a cam you might get some cool pics.
