remote scouting

Unread postby Z7WIBoy » Wed May 09, 2012 8:15 am

Beasts - I have been working on my remote scouting and wanted run something by you folks that are Marsh hunters. From image would you consider those lines in the swamps to be deer trails of something else:

I know it could be lots of things but from your past experience what are your thoughts?
Thanks and appreciate thoughts

Look like deer trails to me. Trails like that are used for years and years and usually connect islands and point but you will have to verify that on foot to make sure they are not human trails.

Yes I would also say those are deer trails. But be careful, sometimes a water canal or beaver canal can look deceivingly like a deer trail.

Deer trails for sure. As stated above sometimes they are not but most of the time they turn out to be deer trails. Todays aerial photos really help out my scouting, kind of puts everything together. After I scout a location I could spend hours just stairing at an aerial photo of the property.

There all deer trails except the one that goes straight North & South... That is a canal.

Interesting. I seen things last season n checked them out found them to be ditches but dry from the weather. Deer was using them to get by several Hunters.

Sometimes when a marsh gradually turns into a lake, you'll see what looks like trails like that going straight into the lake. I like to think they are beaver/non-deer trails in those cases like Dan said, but yea, in your picture, definitely deer trails.

Here's another view, giving a little better detail on the trails. This is an aerial view from Bing. I much prefer the Bird's Eye, when available, because they're much higher resolution and you can look from multiple perspectives (and see different times of year, lighting conditions, etc). But it wasn't available for this area.

I see I left the coordinates on my picture. I guess we will have to arm wrestle for the stand then. I will have to look at bing maps better thanks for the help

Hehe, it's all yours. Actually I didn't see any coordinates in the picture, I just saw the file name and Googled it, then looked around the area for tree patterns that looked similar and zoomed in.

I bet there are buck beds in those small patches of trees with all the trails leading to them. ;)

That is what I am hoping. Probably have to scout and hunt same day as scouting time is extremely limited right now.
