Splayed Tracks And Nonsplayed..Same Buck?

Unread postby KLEMZ » Mon May 07, 2012 9:35 am

I came across a trail last weekend that had 2 sets of fresh walking tracks. It caught my eye because both were huge tracks. One set was walking downhill (splayed). The other walking uphill (not splayed). These are the biggest tracks I saw in the area and i am assuming they are likely made by the same animal. As it turns out I was already an hour late getting out of the woods and didn't take any time to make any observations except that the splayed track was not a running track.

Anybody have experience with an animal that sometimes splays and sometimes not? Or is this two different deer?

Walking down hill with all his weight pushing forward could indeed splay a bucks track. Might be the same buck. To be sure, I would look closer at the track itself for certain curvatures, shapes, nicks, lengths and widths... With a close look, buck tracks are usually identifiable.
