N.Minn Scout Trip

Unread postby blackwolf » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:26 am

Loaded up the canoe and headed north Friday. Sat was a long, enjoyable venture 5 miles in by canoe (with 2hp motor) to "my spot". Since I did not make it there last year, I was anxious to check out last year's rut sign to see what I "missed". My saddle crossing was looking great with a lot of rubs and scrapes nearby. Was especially hyped by finding buck bed on side of ridge about 500 feet from saddle. This put some "pieces" together and I now have a 2nd stand over a great looking ridgeside trail about 200 yards from saddle crossing. 3rd stand is a marsh corner stand that is especially good aft and evenings. So all 3 spots are figured, now just need to head in Aug or Sep and prepare the one new stand with a little trimming. Plan is to hunt N.Minn Oct 28-Nov 6, then to Bayfield Cty, Wis thru Nov 15th.

Do you camp out for the week of hunting ? Sounds like a great time. My uncle has a cabin up North . He has a little journey to get there as well. 10 or so miles in by truck. Then another 5 by 4 wheeler. And than another couple by foot. It's heaven for a guy who wants solitude.

I take an 8 by 10 tent with Big Buddy Heater and enough food and gear for 7-10 days.

That sounds pretty cool. Me and my Dad usually go up North hunting with family in the Kabetogama Forest. It's pretty neat up there.

That's the great thing about Minn, lots of wild areas to get back in away from others for a 1 on 1 with the bucks. Just wish gun season was about a week later for selfish reasons and for more bigger bucks to survive.

Your right ! What a dream it would be for Minnesota to have gun outside of the rut ,like every other top big buck producing state.
Start gun season a week or two later and convert to statewide shotgun and I'd be a happy man.

Minnesota ranking last 50 years .

# 1 in the 1950's
# 1 in the 1960's
# 1 in the 1970's
# 1 in the 1980's
# 9 in the 1990's
# 9 in the 2000's

We are slipping fast or at the minumum NOT growing like other Top States are . Still showing small gains but nothing like Illinois, Iowa, Maine and Wisconsin. There increases are up to 800 % in the last twenty years .
