My 2012 Scouting Season
Hey Beasts
Been in the woods a lot this spring, I though I would post some of my findings and a hopefully give some examples of what I found for those who are just trying to learn about buck bedding areas. This post might get a little long but I tried to simplify things, I am only going to post about 20% of my photos. This is about 6 different tracks of land but two of them are fairly large (over 1500 acres). I probably only covered half of the larger areas. All public land, some easy access, most canoe or a long walk to get to.
To start this area might not look like much but it has buck bedding written all over it, I marked some beds I found in black.
I few of the numerous rubs I found withing 75 yards of the beds, a few in particular were chest high at the top and got me pretty excited.
A buck bed, it might look easyto get to but it was a pain , he has a great view in 3 directions and crazy thick back cover.
His back cover.
................................
A few ramdom beds from a distance, hopefully it helps people know what to look for.
Took my 2010 buck from this bedding area, had to check on it this off season, great sign in the area just didn't produce for me last year.
Had an encounter with a buck last year going in blind to a new area, found his bed this year under this old tree.
A point with a bed and some sign
..............................................
Another fun location, zero huntable trees for a half mile, walking out I started telling myself I was crazy to walk out here but at the same time I just knew I would find soemthing out there. A lot of locations like this up next to a lake seem to hold good bucks in my area. Black dots are the beds I found.
Dozens of rubs like this in a 2-3 acre area.
..............................................................
Another spot I hunted once before but really scouted it out this year, several beds around a main island, they likely use each bed on a specific wind. There were dozens of other beds in the area but I kind of got a feel for the buck beds as they seemed more secure and out on the edges a little bit.
Bed in a little patch of brush, several rubs on the island 60 yards away.
A well used bed 100 yards from the island, no fresh rubs in the bed but you coudl see some old rubs, this was the bed to the far south.
Small island bed off the larger island.
Some rubs on the island in the staging areas.
........................................................................
A few more beds I found in different areas. A bed off a point.
Finally found a good bedding are right next to the parking lot, other hunters followed his rub line the other way but he was bedding off this skinny little point probably watching all the hunters file into the bigwoods.
Island with bedding and good sign off the point.
......................................................
One more good spot, tiny little island off the main land.
Rubs in the bed and and on the transition line.
One more bedding area with good sign just down a 1/4 mile or so.
......................................................
One more nice well used bed I found, a small island in the background but the best bed in the area was under these old trees. Good sing on the main land about 75 yards to the left.
................................................
And finally a few random rubs, likely nigh time rubs as they appears on travel routes or in funnels or in places I didn't locate bedding. This is a total guess but the rub on the far right looks to have been worked over two years ago but the fresh rub appears much higher last fall. Who knows but I'd like to think it was from the same buck who has put a few years under his belt.
Time for bed.

Good stuff for sure. Thanks for sharing.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Cool pics. The rub pics threw me off. I first thought they were all big rub clusters, but then I looked closer and saw they were single rubs edited into one pic...Good luck this season.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.
