Have you seen BING imagery lately?????

Unread postby jlh42581 » Thu Apr 05, 2012 12:31 am

My god, I am printing some maps to put in a binder and just happened to see what bing was up to out of curiosity because from my ag software days they were getting pretty good images.

To say I am blown away would be an understatment. I can see individual branches on trees.

Go to bing maps. Type in your location. In the tools menu at the top, turn on birds eye. Zoom in, give it time to load it up and you will probably never look at imagery the same. It puts google to shame.

Bing is amazing, they don't have the latest images of every area I hunt but the areas they do cover make it a major scouting tool.

Correct, some dont have the super zoom layers but you can get fairly close and still get good detail. I find myself using a lot of different sources for maps. Some an aerial just doesnt do it, some topos dont have relief shading, relief shaded topos dont have as much detail. I hybrid whatever I want together in photoshop then print it on heavy paper and put it in a binder with page protectors so I can draw on it with dry erase markers.

Bing is REALLY good for seeing detail in aerials.

When scouting from the computer I usually have three map windows open at once.

DNR lands map so I can see the boundaries of public properites, measure areas and distances/etc.

Acme mapper to flip back and forth between their satellite and topo features.

Bing to look at their birds eye for and additional more detailed satellite view.

Doing this before hitting the ground really makes me more efficient.

Bing is covering more and more areas all the time. It is worth checking every now and then to see the latest. The same goes for all the mapping sites, they upgrade from time to time so you just need to check your areas every 6 months or so.
It's been mentioned before on this forum, but it is worth repeating.... check out your areas county GIS interactive mapping site. The pictures are current, detailed and best of all taken in the springtime with no leaf cover.

I've been using Bing for aerials for two seasons now, maybe three.

I have killed deer (does and bucks) out of specific individual trees I have picked out via Bing. The ability to rotate views is useful because at least one will be a fall/winter shot (with leaf cover gone).

That photo is further out...you could zoom in past that level.

No lie, I actually have images from Bing...SHOWING DEER in a field. Seriously...it's rather funny.

Been using Bing for quite a while now.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.
