Final touches on spring scouting

Unread postby JJWI » Wed Apr 04, 2012 12:38 pm

With the honey do list becoming a NEED TO GET DONE NOW situation. I figured I better get some of these spots ready for this year. Only problem, I was off, wifey had to work, and the kids had spring break! So I took the kids. I did have to blind fold them and had to tell them the dire consiquences if they ever told anyone of these areas! Yes my kids will sell their father out! lol First spot is the spot were I had to make some beds unusable so other deer won't tip off the target animal. I found a couple of good rubs on a transition line. What really caught my eye was this whole area has been rubbed by bigger deer for many years. You can see it with the really older rubs that were scared over. I followed the trails down, and found an island with hardly any huntable trees in it, lo and behold, that is were the bed was!

Area #2 different area, different buck. Found this bed on a hillside. Would of set up on him with the wrong wind if it wasn't for the Hill Country video. It may not be steep hill country, but the thermals are still a factor here!

Those rubs def look like they were made from a stud of a deer. Good luck with the spots! 8-)

I do know both bucks are still around. I jumped the buck that did the first rub out of his bedding area on Friday. Bed was fresh and found his track going out. The second buck I cut his track on Sunday on the other side of the section. I found 2 beds he is using, but I believe he is bedding off the public right now. I believe he comes back to these areas when the all the private land around this section starts getting hunted. I think when everyone starts seeing him in late summer and start setting stands and putting out trail cameras to find him, thats what tips him off and he starts using these areas. I have other pictures of his rubs which are impressive, but this is a heavily hunted public area and some land marks do stand out. I didn't get to scout another area that I really wanted to look at for about 2 years now. I have been seeing this impressive track and rubs while Snowshoe Hare hunting for the last 2 years and always wanted to pursue this deer. But there are a lot of areas to check out and not enough time!

I like the rub with the tine marks on the big tree. 8-) I found one exactly like that last weekend when I was scouting!

Looks like a great spot. Good luck killing a buck in the coming season.

Thanks guys, hopefully I can get a crack at one of these bucks. Knowing were they are bedding is the key piece to this puzzle! Knowing were they bed and feel safe helps your confidence on getting a crack at them! After getting that first site ready and walking out, I found more details on why that buck is bedding there, this spot gives him more of advantage than I realized. Just being able to hunt this area is going to take alot of conditions to be right before I can go in!
