Need to get back out

Unread postby Czabs » Tue Mar 13, 2012 11:29 pm

I have been busy with work and school but still have been managing to get out to some of the spots I've scouted already to verify stand locations and look for antlers.

But I need to get back out looking at virgin areas.

I have 3 public pieces yet that I want to get a feel for, and I think that will put me in pretty good shape for the upcoming season. I like that the snow is gone but now the ice is gone too :? .

I have never scouted out marshes and cattail swamps this time of year. Obviously I'm going to need a pair of waders. Any other tips or advice for going out this time of year?

i would use a walking stick to probe the waters ahead, sometimes it gets deep or the bottom is much softer in an area.

I would skip the waders and just use rubber boots and learn how to walk in the marsh... The waders are going to tire you out and make you sweat. With some practice you can get thru a marsh pretty easy without getting wet.

I hear ya there! Thank God we've had a dry year thus far. My marsh scouting is way down this spring; not because of desire. . .it was just easier to drive a little further to scout (and walk farther) in hill country.
