Chasing down rumors...
Been hearing a lot of rumors about a huge buck in a marsh that I don't hunt often cause of the distance from my home. During gun season I ran into some guys at registration with a 175 inch typical 10 point who said they missed an even bigger buck. While they were drinking and talking I over heard where they were hunting. They only gun hunt, and only do drives. Then a friend told me about the biggest buck he had ever seen and named the same spot.
I checked it out on google earth and figured where I would expect the buck to be living and then went out there to investigate today. Its pretty remote and I needed to cross about a 1/2 mile of frozen swamp managing to put each leg thru once. The access is kind of hidden and it looks like only a few people enter from where I did, and I wonder how many swim thru the swamp a mile from there truck to get to the remote oak island I went too...
When I got there I was not disappointed when I hit the 1st area I picked on the map and it was littered with stomach / chest high rubs and beds with rubs in them. My secondary spot a little farther back had the same big high rubs and fresh beds. Both spots appeared to be primary bedding for this buck.
I am looking forward to this coming season!

Sounds like great potential in that area, Dan. If the big fella can avoid car bumpers and poachers it sounds like some time needs to be spent there... looking forward to hearing how this all develops.

Awesome Dan! Did you find his bed(s)? Have you figured out the access and stand sites or do you need to return?
Typically does it take you more than one trip to figure an area out? Or can you do it on one scout? Probably depends on the area.
Congrats!

Awesome Dan. What's your next step? Do you pan to try to shine this buck or do you think that you may tip more people off to where he lives/feeds?

I found several of his beds... A couple that look to be primary. I in no way have this entire area figured out. Its very large tamarack swamp, dogwood swamp, cattail marsh, and hardwoods all wrapped in one.
I figured where I expected him to bed based on maps and rumors and went straight to the best spots.
It would take me several years to know this swamp as well as the ones around home. But by the looks of the sign out there, I need to start hunting more there. There looks to be a lot more deer.

There is not much around thats shinable... I think my next step is to sit back and wait for the season to open.
