Hindsight Hill Country Failure

Unread postby jlh42581 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 2:19 am

So yesterday I wanted to go back to a piece of property which I couldnt ever figure out. The last time I hunted this place was probably 10 years ago. Determined, I marked some spots to investigate. I checked said spots and not one of those spots I picked on the map panned out however I did run into a new area by following sign in the other areas. It looks to be HOT but thats not the story.

I ended up about 3 miles from the parking area. The area I parked has some state maintained food plots. Back when I used to hunt this area it got a lot of pressure from bird hunters as they used to stock pheasants here. That has since stopped. I would park in the parking area, head up through the food plot and park myself in a general area of some rubs and just hope something showed up. Nothing ever did. I had written this side off before my scouting trip but on my way back it was either walk out an old roadbed or follow the 1/3 transition ridge above the food plot. I elected to go the long way and I am glad I did. What I found south of that food plot showed me why I failed every time I hunted there.

First, theres a point above it, classic buck bedding as we all know, the backdrop for him is a lake, no one coming that way. On a South East wind however, he lays underneath a giant white oak where he can see off that point and have a 270 degree view of anything below. Couple that with the rising thermal and hes about bulletproof. Unless you go way wide north east of him, circle back and then you can get in that magic zone.

The easy route killed me time and time again before that hunt even started.

Good to see you are putting some Beast stuff to good use.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Great learning experience, makes you reconsider your "useless" areas.

Great follow up. So is he getting a second look next year now that you've figured him out? 8-)

Ill be giving him a shot this fall. He might not be quite the caliber I am after. The sign itself wasnt anything eye opening.

Thats the eye opener most people need to see the light beast style... When you realize that bucks are figuring you out, rather than you figuring them out, it changes the way you hunt.
