DEM Shading Expanded

Unread postby TN Whitetail Freak » Wed Jul 22, 2015 1:59 am

I was going through the search just reading anything and everything when i came across a neat thread where a member was posting on how to find the upper 1/3 of the ridges using the DEM Shading feature on caltopo.com.....i thought that was the coolest and a convenient tool....i got to playing with it and then applied it to the cypress swamp hunting i do here in west TN....basically using the DEM Shading to find the high spots in the swamps that could potentially hold bedded bucks during the floods or even a high spot to give a buck an advantage in flat terrain swamp country.....it works rather well and ive already found a few spots that look like good potential spots...here are some example of what Im talking about. the first thing to do is measure a profile across the swamp to get a base elevation and in my case it around the 85-95 meter mark then i gradually narrow the range to really distinguish those high blue spots from the reds or colorless low spots that are below the range. This narrows down the spots i want to focus on in the bottoms and really be more efficient with my time scouting.

I do not know if anyone else has noticed but cal topo has made it easier to add dem shading to your maps. They now have drop down boxes and all you do is fill in the blanks and the add button.

It is more user friendly.

I have followed the original post's instructions, and can't get any shading to show up on caltopo... Anyone got any tricks or tips?

Seth,

I got your PM. This feature was not working this AM. I emailed CalTopo and they have fixed the issue.

I also replied, but the msg is hung in my outbox.

Crap i posted in the original thread. Anyhow thanks for the tip! And also ive played with the sunlight analysis feature and it seems it will let you know what areas shade first at dusk and heat up in the am. Its limited but i thought it could be a added tool.
