For many years I have heard that for big stream trout, especially monster browns, the best bait is minnows. I usually hear "salted minnows", but the problem is that I don't how they are supposed to rigged and fished. Earlier tonight I had a friend tell me that the guides on one of our big rivers run the line through the minnows mouth and it is tied to a hook that sticks out the pooper, but he didn't know how they were fished. Drifted, setting on the bottom in a hole, or ?
Does anybody know anything about using this technique? LenH?

You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

There's a wire rig you can buy if your using salted minnows. Basically it's a wire twisted up with a hole on both ends. You stick the wire through the minnows mouth and out it's but. Then there is a special hook, with two barbs and the shank isn't welded, that will thread right on the wire loop coming through the baits but. (like a treble, without the third hook and no weld down the shank)
I like live minnows better, but they are harder to lug around live. Those you can hook through the lips or through the back.
Cast minnows upstream, and let them come downstream. You want enough weight to put them near the bottom and still drift through the hole...

A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.
