Would you report a permanent stand on public?
There's a particular public marsh that I've hunted all my life. Has hardwoods, cedar swamp, and vast expanses of cattails. There have been times during the late season that I've hauled in a step ladder to hunt those cattails when all sign in the woods is non-existent, and have had success with that method.
It seems that every year there are large argo/4 wheeler trails that go straight through those cattails to a secluded patch of private land. This, I've heard, is legal (even though they've got a big network of trails with only one leading straight to the private land).
However, last winter I was driving past and happened to see a large permanent tripod stand that had been build out there. Must have been pretty big considering I could see it from my car across a half mile of cattails. The argo trails are one thing, but there's no way that big tripod is legal right in the middle of the public cattails!! It certainly isn't fair to the rest of the hunters who'd have to lug a step ladder out there to hunt.

I'd report it but I doubt the DNR would do anything about it.

Re: Would you report a permanent stand on public?
I have reported a few just because I hate the fact that some people have no respect for others and act like they can claim spots on public land. I won't hunt these spots and avoid them myself but feel that others are cheated out of hunting spots by these people. If I find an illegal stand I e-mail or text the warden the GPS coordinates and let him decide what he wants to do.

I leave them alone.
Regarding stands being left on public in northern WI.......it is legal in some cases.

The problem is if we leave them alone where they are actually illegal too many people think it is o.k. to do that and next thing you know public land is taken over by a bunch of morons that have no respect for other hunters. Most of the time I find it is the same people that do this over and over. These are the people that need be turned in and made an example off.

I would report it but it is likely that nothing will come of it. The positive side is you can now form a strategy around what these goof balls are doing. Knowing where other hunters are is just as important as knowing where beds are.

I wouldn't. If they went to the trouble of making that structure and given their proximity to the area, they're probably commited to the hunt. I think it's more predictable to let them have their structure and then make your hunt off of what develops as a result. Also a big structure like that will likely discourage others from hunting the area, possibly keeping the pressure down.

Re: Would you report a permanent stand on public?
Is the argo legal because it is amphibious? So the argument is that it is a boat and they are traveling on navigable waterways because in WI a waterway is deemed navigable if it holds enough water to float a canoe in spring? I assume that's the route they are taking based on my understanding of the law. That sounds like BS to me. Argo tires are not cheap, you seem to be creative I bet you could come up with some nice spike strips to deter them. As far as the stand, a small chainsaw is cheap to get rid of it. I hate seeing other peoples stands on public land but if its not mine I leave it alone.

Re: Would you report a permanent stand on public?
I would just leave it. I know where a pretty nice lone wolf is right now that I could have. Whenever I find stuff like this I always just do something so that they know other people know about their setup. I took the bottom stick off and set it on the ground in this situation and have taken trail cameras and flipped them upside down. All harmless stuff but it lets them know your there WHatever anyone does, stealing is B.S.
