On average....
120" in northern WI with a chance of P&Y
150" in southern WI with a chance of B&C
But agree, property specific.

Dewey wrote:My goal is to see at least one 150" buck on public land in Southern WI every season and so far I have been pretty lucky to accomplish this except for a few seasons since the mid-90's. Usually I average 2-3 buck sightings over 130" for sure but the last few seasons it just seem to be getting better and better and I have been averaging between 5-6 bucks over 130". I'm sure this had something to do with EAB that ended a few years ago but also I am hunting much smarter than I have in the past. I never hunt the same tree twice in a season and only hunt a spot if the wind is absolutely perfect.
Where I hunt Northern WI it is totally different. In the last 20 years I only saw maybe 5-6 bucks that would score over 120". I used to spend alot of time up there but the past few years have been hunting down south much more and it has been paying off.
I believe that on most public land in WI you can get on a mature buck if you scout hard enough and put in the time on stand. Now killing them is a different story!!
Things have changed pretty drastically as far as deer population since I posted this 6 years ago but surprisingly my numbers of larger buck sightings hasn't dropped off much. I attribute that to continuing to hunt smarter. Last year I spent most of my season in Iowa so my buck sightings took a nice jump heading into and during the rut but it was still far from easy. In the end it still compared to a good season here in WI but suspect that would no doubt increase with more experience there.

I'd say I'll see at least 1-2 bucks 125+ with a decent chance at one over 140 and a slim chance at one over 160 although i have one on my radar this year

Re: Caliber of bucks
My goal this year southern MI is a 2.5, 100" deer. I have not seen very many on public but I know the terrain will hold them. In 3 years of off and on hunting public I have seen only 1 over 100", but that was pre beast. This will be my first only public only beast style season, so I am hoping I have more encounters this year.

Re: Caliber of bucks
In southeast WI...I usually saw a 2-4, 120-130 each year pre-beast. I did see my 1st 140 3 years ago.
This year is my first actual "beast" season we will see? My pre-season camera pics of 120+ bucks are already much better than last year.
