I base most of my hunts out of my home since I am surrounded by plenty of public land.
If I hunt up north I usually stay at a friends cabin as this is the location of our gun deer camp.
If I hunt out of state I either rent a cabin or find a motel that doesn't mind if we hang a deer.

Most of the public land I hunt is only a couple miles from my house.

I couldn't agree more that lots of pre-planning for public land trips makes distant hunts much more manageable. It is a real bonus if you have decent public land close to home. 8-)

I'm lucky to have many public spots within reasonable driving distance of home...

Closest public to me is less than a mile as the crow flies.

I can walk out my back door and be on public but it lacks good bedding areas

Most of my public hunting is done from home, if its public within 45 minutes of my home I've probably hunted it. During rifle season we have a shack (compound) in northern mn. Old home (logging camp) converted into a hunting shack in 1950, since then we have added a 2nd bunkhouse, sauna, and now 3 garages. Its on 80 of private but I hunt the 50K+ public land surrounding it. Not going to lie, its pretty comfortable hunting.
