Re: The Halloween Buck
I think the key here, is that many private parcels are small and over hunted, while many public places are large enough that most of the pressure is localized close to parking lots/roads, leaving some undisturbed areas if your willing to find them. When I hunted public land in Ohio, I had guys telling me they were over 1 mile off the roads. Im guessing they had never actually looked at an aerial photo, or used a GPS. On that tract of public land, there were roads breaking it up and you could not walk 1 mile without hitting another road. Point is, many think they are WAY off the road, but they arent. Also a deer can live a lot longer if he has a place to escape, and large unbroken tracks of timber can provide that. Many of the wood lots in farm land are small and deer are easily driven out of them and you know which wood lot to find him in as you saw him run to it. Hills and big woods give bucks the advantage on the average hunter.

Much of Lower Michigan is made up of small private parcels, 40 acres or less, and it is VERY EASY for a few guys to overhunt any particular property. On public land I look for some of the following:
[glow=red]An area so large there is an opportunity for bucks to relocate to remote areas.
An area so thick and nasty or physically demanding that it keeps ninety-nine percent of the hunters out.
An area that for whatever reason is completely overlooked by the vast majority of hunters.[/glow]
Most of my public land hunting falls into one of these categories. Some hunters have public land parcels that have lower hunting pressure on the public land than the adjacent private properties for one reason or another... that is seldom the case in MidMichigan where public lands are laced with access roads.

headgear, he was a Michigan northwoods swamp beast that I met many years ago that provided me with a lot of insight. One of those guys that could really get you to stop and think.
Cool, I was wondering if it was one of the more well known hunters of our time or someone who is a truly great hunter that no one has ever heard of before.

The latter, no one has ever heard of before.
I believe there are many such hunters, as I know of more than one just from my home state.

Re: The Halloween Buck
I have heard of a few myself, I just never had the opportunity to meet or learn from any of them.
Here is a good story about one unknown old timer. A guy I hunt with was driving up north and see's an old man dragging a deer by himself so figured he would stop and help the old guy load the deer up. He gets up to the deer and see a giant body, upon further inspection it is a big buck with thick bases on top of his head. Now the best part, the old man sawed the horns off and left them in the woods. When asked why he replied "eh, those things get caught on everything" and he went on his way.

That is great stuff, headgear- I couldn't help but smile after reading it. The old guy had his priorities and I have nothing but respect for that.
