Kayaks for access

Unread postby Bucksquad1 » Tue Jun 23, 2020 8:03 am

What are some of the better and more affordable kayaks that would be good for this? Something you can at least use to get your tree stand setup, and bow into some remote public areas

I bought a Perception Rambler 13.5’ for about $400 new. Deep seating and hauls a deer out pretty easily. It is suppose to fit 3 people, 2 adults and a child. It’s about 70lbs, I think, but I made a diy kayak cart out of pvc and harbor freight wheels. Easy moving after that.

I use an NC company called Creek Boats, there m80 model is what I have. It is listed at 36 pounds with a weight capacity of 300lbs. I have had it over that with myself (200lbs), dog (80lbs) and probably 30 lbs of gear. I also use it for accessing swamp islands and it works good. Just be sure to sit on your but if you are using it, paddling on your knees in the dark, in 30 degree weather makes it unstable and you might go for a swim(that sucked).

I bought this one 2 years ago. I bought it in the fall and it was on sale for $225. I’m 6’2” 240 and fit just fine. My stand fits under the bungees on the back and I carry my bow in my lap.

How does this kayak handle in river? I seen some reviews on it but wasn't sure. The water we go down moves pretty good in spots but nothing to crazy

I haven’t had any issues with it. I let a buddy borrow it for a work float we went on (I was in my canoe with another guy). That was his first time in a kayak. The river was about 80-90 yards wide and had a couple swift spots. He never had any problems and was boozing. I normally use it on smaller rivers when I hunt where the current isn’t that strong so I can go up or down river. I’m glad I bought it. I don’t use kayaks enough to have a higher end one.

I use an ascend 12T that i got on facebook for $300. Its big but holds alot of gear and tracks very well. I installed a bow holder towards the front and have an elevated seat with a phone attachment so I can navigate. Only downside is that its heavy and bright blue, so I built a kayak cart out of PVC and harbor freight wheels and tow that thing anywhere now. For the bright blue I have a camo tarp I lay over it when I pull it into the brush. One thing I would light to have is a light system that I can move around because my headlamp doesn't do the trick if there is fog.

I bought an intex 2 person inflatable kayak two years ago for like $60 bucks. It’s done great for me and might be a good cheap option for you if you want to go that route.

Before buying a nucanoe, I had an ascend 12t from bass pro. You can probably pick up a used one on craigslist/facebook marketplace if you start looking. It will get the job done.

I have a coleman 15' canoe that I use on lakes and rivers to access a couple pieces of public around me, I modified a bracket on the back of the canoe that I attach a trolling motor to, way easier to be quite that way and less work if it's windy.
