The 325 gr FTX is a great bullet. That's what I reload my 45-70 rounds with as well. Beats the crap out of the 405gr core lokt.

On deer.
But if you had to hunt a Cape buffalo with a 45-70, I'd bet you'd find the opposite true...

Alot of them were misplaced attempts at head and neck shots. So plenty of other hunters aren't capable of those either. Not saying you should never take neck shots. You just better know what your doing. My dad killed alot of his deer with neck shots, using a .303 British! So I knew it could be done. Just not for me!

I know what your saying about those neck shots. With proper placement they will drop them in their tracks, if your off well let's just say good luck. I hear alot of older hunters talk about these shots and I have shot one before in the neck. It's not the preferred method but is an option for someone who is confident in their shot and is capable of doing so.

.270 in the shoulder blade was a stop, drop and flop.

Calm deer die faster. I've noticed both bow hunting and gun hunting a deer that doesn't realize it's been shot goes down faster. The bow buck I got three years ago jumped, looked around started eating a maple leaf and fell over.

My gun buck this year I shot when he stood up out of his bed, ran 20 yards, stopped looked around I put another in him and he fell over. The first shot blew out the back of his heart and lungs but he didn't know it and neither did I.

I’ve dumped a couple over the years with the gun. 3 different occasions were does coming straight at me with the 11-87 and Sabot slugs. Through the chest and out the poop shoot.

My gun buck this year also. Had my .270 with hand loaded 140 gr Barnes Triple Shock bullets @3120 FPS at the muzzle. Granted where I shot him it didn’t really matter what caliber/round I was using, but this round pummels any whitetail i shoot with it. Anyways, he got up before I was ready to get in an opening and check the bed. He bobbed and weaved his way away from me through red brush and I could only see his head for 0.5 seconds multiple times, and he wasn’t going in a straight line. I had a good idea where he was going, calmed myself a little, put the crosshairs where I was expecting him, took safety off and waited. Shortly, I saw the tips of his tunes coming up and as soon as I saw the back of his head, I let off a round. “Boom....Tha-WAAAAP!” Cycled the bolt and kept aiming but didn’t see anything for about 30 seconds. Went to check and he was laying upside down. Hit him in the back of the mellon and the bullet came out in the bridge of his nose. He never felt a thing.

High shoulder shot. You will watch their rear sag in the scope it knocks them down so fast. Looks like they got pole axed. Don’t want them to run that’s the spot! I’ve shot many, many there. Same round (140 gr. 6.5 Creedmoor) through the lungs and they will run every time. Usually down inside of 75 yards though.

I’ve shot completely over more than my fare share. But I only remember shooting 1 with a bow in the spine region. Sucker, dropped in in tracks and I was so excited. Watched him spin around on the ground and every so often try to raise his head. Was kinda green at the time and just watched and looked at what I just shot danced in my head.

I waited about 30 min and started to climb down and when I hit the last stick the buck burned off like he was shot out of a cannon. Never did find that deer. Hard lesson learned. Guess I didn’t completely break spine. Now days I will empty a quiver until I know for a fact the sucker is dead.

70 grain Barnes TSX in 5.56 is one of the most underrated low-recoil rounds. Had several DRT’s with them

I've had several now drop in their tracks, 2 bucks were with my .270 and 130 grain federal fusions one was 75 yards and the other was 30 yards both heart shots. Another buck with a 30-06 and 180 grain 25 yards high shoulder shot, and one doe with my .50 cal muzzy 100 grains of powder and 300 grain shockwave I think that one was 60-70 yards?

Has anyone dropped one with a shotgun slug? If so what was the distance and shot placement?
