Glass Arrows

Unread postby Singing Bridge » Sun Aug 25, 2019 9:42 am

I was listening to a podcast the other day, and the host asked about the transition from cedar arrows to aluminum arrows...

now hold on, there was more than that!! I may be aging myself here, but who amongst us Beasts has shot glass arrows? Were they good / bad ??? did you kill a deer with them??? what did you like or dislike about them???

Only for carp.

It was only aluminum and carbon for me... and I’m on the old side of the equation.

Never shot fiberglass shafts myself. But knew a few oldtimers that did. I think it kind of depended on what part of the country you lived, as far as whether they got used. Sometimes a local legend used them and the other locals followed suit. Other areas/localities cedars were "the" shaft material, and even when the quality of aluminum's got plenty good. If the local hero stuck with cedars, so did the others.

Mid Seventies we had glass arrows for deer hunting... far from the greatest.

I had some. I remember making some up in my dads shop and not knowing what would happen if you heated the end with a torch to remove the insert.

I remember shooting them in the yard just for practice. They leave an impression when you run one across your hand and get paled by a fiber. I would hate to shoot a deer with one then have the deer run and break it in him. That would be a mess.

The early carbons kind of did the same thing. They even had a cancer warning on them about consuming any fibers hidden in the meat.

I remember that too. People were totally opposed to them because of that.

Yes, I spoke with more than one hunter that shot a deer with glass arrows and they shattered inside the body cavity.

I started shooting in the late 70s - 77 or 78. I had aluminum and my father was using some kind of carbon weave arrows that would splinter and fracture, especially if they hit something hard.
