Alpha and Sticks, Treesaddle, or Assassin?

Unread postby PLB » Wed Mar 10, 2010 2:49 pm

I want to be more mobile and dig in a little deeper on my public areas this year! This means swamp and junk trees! This means my hand climber won't be of much use in these areas. SOOOOO..... I would like everyone's opinions and why as to what you feel is the best for all around mobility and ease of set-up in these situations. Thanks for the help! PLB

Most days I'm quite happy with my Assault, when it gets windy I wish I had my Alpha back. Tree saddles make me feel like a coon or squirrel, no thank you. My opinion on them is they're not worth the money or time. A lot of guys end up sellinng their tree saddles off as they don't use them, rarely do guys end up selling their Assaults or Alphas.

Assault with sticks gets you up any tree you can climb - even if it's only a few feet high.

Alpha and Sticks is what I use I just like having that little bit of extra platform space to move around on, I will sacrifice the extra two pounds for being able to move my feet around for the shot.

I use alpha hang ons with tree pegs. When ur going over a mile its nice to just have a fanny pack of pegs and a stand on your back.

I use the Alpha and sticks quite a bit, but if I'm going in deep I'll take the Saddle, mainly for portability. The length of time I'll be sitting is also a factor....longer sits get the Alpha and shorter sits will get the Saddle.

If I'm not going too far back, it's the Alpha and sticks for me. If I'm really hauling back in, its the Assault and sticks. The Assault is a lot easier to maneuver through the blowdowns when you are climbing through cedar swamps. The extra room and comfort of the Alpha is great when its practical.

How big of a guy are you? I have the Assault and there are many days when I don't feel quite comfortable in it. The platform is shorter/smaller and being 6' 2" with larger feet there are many days that I'm slightly worried about tumbling down. The Alpha I sold back in the day I would REALLY like to have back. That being said, there are some tree forks that I frequent where the Assault works and the Alpha would not.

Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

Still would recommend the Alpha and still would rather have my old one back. Need to find a deal on one I guess.

I use the L/W mini's, Dan is right about the kick out. You have to watch how you strap them. Loggy predator for carry in stands.

On sets that stay up a few days I use Big Game Boss XL's and strap on ladders.

I have a couple trees where the alpha wouldn't fit in a tree where the stump grows a half dozen trunks. I want to be in the middle of them and the alpha has a longer platform and hits the trunks across from it. You could hang on the outside but you'd be sticking out and you'd be leaning out from the way the trunk hangs. You could get higher, but you'd need tree steps or another stick, and make it work I suppose. One thing to remember is where there is a will there is a way to make it work.

As I stated above, I'd prefer to have the Alpha back and deal with those situations as they arise.
