Horse Trails
A couple of the WMA's I hunt has horse trails running all through them. I've never hunted close to them but I have recently found some promising spots within 100 yards or so of them. These WMA's are not open same as statewide seasons, they are quota hunt only. Has anyone had negative experiences hunting close to horse trails?

Re: Horse Trails
I killed my Iowa buck near a horse trail and saw a number of other bucks that seemed to be totally unaffected by them. After running cams I could tell that it didn't bother them at all so I used that to my advantage by using the horse trails for access. I even watched from stand as larger groups riders came by while deer were around me. They noticed the riders as they were talking rather loudly but the deer including good bucks just watched them walk by and then resumed whatever they were doing. They see them pretty much every day and know they aren't a threat.

Re: Horse Trails
I had same experience as Dewey. I hunted a park with horse trails and guy hunting killed a giant right off the horse trail, so they can be productive as deer seem not to see horses as threat.

Re: Horse Trails
We hunt an area with a horse trail and another well used, popular through hiking trail running through this piece of public. We use them to walk fast and cut tracks heading back to bedding with some success on mature bucks.
Edit- This is a firearms strategy.

Re: Horse Trails
Yes mid October I hunted right off of a horse trail and seen multiple hunters and normal people walking by I ended up seeing a really solid buck come up in front of me and cross that same trail like it was normal I just didn’t get a shot at him

Re: Horse Trails
Watch what happens when you are walking on one of those trails and suspect a deer is bedding near by. They will let you walk on by with no reaction, but when you take a few steps off off the trail, they bug out.
