Illegal tree stand..what would you do?
So I went out today in my local public marsh to prep a few trees for a young man I'm going to be taking out this year. I looked at spots in big timber and sort of where you will find other hunters and lots of does and small bucks. I was so annoyed when almost all of the spots I went to I found hanging or ladder stands in the same general area. State law says all stands must be removed daily. It's frustrating I'm trying to teach this kid the right way and here are all these stands prehung so guys can "claim" their spots....so what would you do? Call DNR... or just move on? .most time I'd day move on but I'm getting sick of people posting stands all over while I break my back carrying my stuff in and out. It almost seems the last few years it's gotten the worst. Guys know no DNR officer is going out looking for stands and enforcing that law so the problem is getting worse. Glad my honey holes don't have any stands in them

Send GPS coordinates to your local warden. Hopefully they take care of the problem. If more people did this the problem would be much less. I turn in every one I find and it's rarely an issue anymore. The local warden does a great job dealing with this.

I turned in 7 or 8 sets in 2015. DNR was happy to help! I have a bunch more I could turn in if I want to.
Theres no reason people can't follow the rules.

If I have time I take them down. Leave them at the bottom of the tree.

That's what I would do.

Mark it in your gps and figure out how they are accessing them. Free intel.
IMO I don't want the ruffle feathers. I'd rather know their spots than come out from a long hunt to a broken windshield or a flat tire.

Turn them in. You are either part of the problem, or part of the solution.

Re: Illegal tree stand..what would you do?
I usually make it obvious somebody was there. I rarely find new and currently used stands. Find lots of old abandoned stands that have trees going up them, rusted apart, or are never used before.
Found this one yesterday, about 100 yards from where I used to hunt a couple years ago, and about 50 yards from where I'll be opening day by a bedding area.
Ran into the guy who used it a couple years ago after I pulled out some of his screw in steps. Haven't seen him since, and the stand is still there, hasn't been touched.

I guess telling your warden may be best. I'm with Tbunao, I don't wanna anyone off and get into a situation in the woods or have my car messed with.

I mark them on gps and send it to the dnr. Not sure if they ever do anything but it doesnt hurt.

Re: Illegal tree stand..what would you do?
Just turned in five last week on a smaller property. Didn't have my gps at the time so pulled up a google east map and pinned the locations. I probably wouldn't have turned them in but two of them had trimmed a lot of the trees they were in and used screw in steps.

Re: Illegal tree stand..what would you do?
Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm going to call DNR and let them deal with it. I do not have a GPS so I'm going to give him an areial with pins...I will offer to walk around with him too and show him...whoever it was that said if your not part of the solution your part of the problem was a good statement. We as hunters are the eyes and ears for DNR so we do need to do our part. (Forums like thia remind me of that) As for conflict I thought about it but there are lots of guys who hunt the same woods so I doubt it would get linked back. Glad to hear you guys are turning these people in too

Re: Illegal tree stand..what would you do?
I turned in 1 last year (state land) and 1 this year (federal land), sent coordinates to the local wardens and they said they would take care of it. Still nothing has been done, I don't think they care much about it or they are severely understaffed and don't have time to get to them. It's kind of annoying...

Absolutely turn them in. I can't stand it when people don't play by the rules or if they "claim" their spot on public land.

That's what I'm worried might happen...I know there is 1 maybe 2 officers for 3 counties. Of state DNR. This is on federal land and the federal warden doesnt play games but that said he patrols about 300miles of land in 2 states so I see him maybe once a year if that....it all reminds me why I bring my boat in and get far away from the yahoo hunters. But I'll make the call
