PREVAILING WINDS/online resources

Unread postby BCR1985 » Wed Aug 30, 2017 1:52 pm

Any suggestions for a website or resource to get an accurate idea of where the prevailing winds will be on the day of a hunt? I'm hunting a new spot in hill country and have a few stand sites picked but its a 2 hour drive plus another 2 hours to get on stand. I'd like to know which approach/stand to select based upon what the wind is doing in advance. Any suggestions?

If you want to use a free mobile app, Hunstand is one that has a section that shows what the wind is supposed to do hourly throughout the day. It seems to do pretty well for me in WV as long as I'm near the top of the ridge. You can also use it online on a computer for free too.

Good to hear you guys like it, I found it through another beast member not long ago but thought it was worth reposting and sharing the knowledge.

One thing you need to very aware of is..I have found that any of the sites I have used (most but not windy.com) may be accurate in certain areas but not always with specifically where I am hunting or in the woods.

They make a good general planning guide but always important to know how it will likely be where you hunt and to check that upon arrival.

Obviously we don't have anything better than a website forecast so it's all we have to go at decision time but I have used them to choose one property or a side of a property over another and found it to be incorrect or had changed upon arrival.
