DIY nebraska
So a couple of friends and i are planing to hunt outside of wisconsin for the archery opener. Im thinking nebraska since you can get an otc liscenes and it's pretty reasonable, I've been on a couple of sites showing public land and Im thinking either the n.e. or the s.e. part of the state. I like the Missouri river area but want to avoid the high populated counties. Im going to be going down there to scout sometime in march or before green up to determine if i'll commmit to hunting it or not. If anyone one has any tips or pointers id love to hear them. Im not asking for exact locations just wanting to get pointed in the right direction. Thanks.

I've got a buddy who lives out there and he shoots monster bucks. He moved out there and is a taxidermist. He left WI and said he never looked back. Non-res archery tag is AROUND 200 bucks and you can shoot a muley or whitetail. Your own cost then is motel and food. I'll see what other info I can gather from him and I will post it here. Good luck.

Re: DIY nebraska
I am looking into hunting Nebraska this fall as well. We had some good hunting for mulies in the NW corner up around Chadron and Crawford in the past but thinking about checking out other areas.
I'm very interested to hear more info on this from others. Nebraska is a sleeper state in my opinion and not a lot of bowhunters, especially non-residents.

Re: DIY nebraska
Look for a spot with a river. Anywhere you find a spot along the Missouri should have nice deer.Or any river, that seems where the best cover is. Like you said less populated places might be better. There are more whitetails on the east side, and from what I hear the further west you go the more muley's there are. I go to NE every year and have friends there now, and it just gets better every year due to the knowledge we gain and build on.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Re: DIY nebraska
Spysar any tips on what your looking for around the river bottoms? Do you still use topos for potential spots, key in on terrian features or just put miles on the boots?

Re: DIY nebraska
It's just the best deer habitat seems to be associated with rivers, big and small. I have only hunted one area in NE so I'm not sure how it is all over the state. Where I hunt, if you get too far away from a river, there will be miles of crops or cows, with not a lot of trees. Not to say there aren't good spots away from rivers either....Ariels are a good way to tell..And yeah, I use ariels and topos like crazy. Most spots I go, I have to "cyber" scout. When I get there I wear out the boots a bit...My deer vacations are long enough where I have time to scout and hunt.

Thanks Spysar for the reply. There is a public land spot Im digging into that runs along the river so im thirsting for knowledge. Never hunted near a body of water before. Right now Im just cyber scouting it until I can get time to hit the ground w/ my boots.

I have a buddy in Crawford has a ranch and they've been thinning the whitetails and really trying to manage for Mullies. He tells me there's some real nice Mullies there.

Re: DIY nebraska
As a kid my family lived in Nebraska for a couple of years and the areas around the Platte River always had a decent population of both whitetails and muleys. I didn't even take the time to hunt there as I was only 10-years old. Looking back....I wish I would have....we used to see some big deer while pheasant hunting.

That's a good area especially if you can get some permission on some private land. The last time I hunted around Crawford was 1998 and there were plenty of mulies. I hear the population really dropped after that but has really been coming back the last few years.
Just did a little research and found out that 75% of whitetails and 83% of mule deer bucks shot last year were over 2 1/2 years old with many much older. Sounds like the age structure is really good right now and plenty of opportunities on trophy deer.
I'm thinking about heading out there early-mid Oct. for a spot and stalk hunt. Been spending way too much time in treestands the last few years. Nebraska has one of the cheaper tags at $209 and hunting pressure is very light.

I have been wanting to go there for years. Maybe one of these day's. I think Nebraska would be an awesome and unique experience.

Re: DIY nebraska
I have seen a lot of deer out there. With my job I am all over the place.I really don't get a chance to do hands on scouting while I am working. But in the evenings along to road I usually see tons of deer in the eastern side.I am always keeping a eye out fo areas with abundant amounts of wildlife.I have actually carried my gear in the truck and done a couple of hunts in northern Mo. on public from my truck. There are some great archery only areas in Northern Mo.Pm me if your are interested. I have a spot that I hunt in northwest Mo on public.

Wanted to bring this to the top I am looking into trying Nebraska in 2012 and I have been doing some poking around here are the numbers dewey was talking about.
So are you guys suggesting higher numbers and success rates on the eastern side of the state for whitetails? Also, less hunter pressure? I know I have a lot more research to do I have just been scanning the internet and recently received a packet of info in the mail from NE Game and Parks.

Record Number of Deer Harvested in Nebraska
Nebraska deer hunters produced a big year in 2010, setting records for overall and antlerless whitetail harvest.
Game and Parks has a goal of reducing the whitetail population in eastern Nebraska by harvesting more antlerless deer. Here's how:
The total deer harvest during the 2010 season was 88,034 (77,028 whitetails and 10,709 mule deer). While a record 37,967 whitetail bucks were killed, a record 39,198 antlerless whitetails also were killed – marking the first time the antlerless whitetail harvest surpassed whitetail buck harvest.
The antlerless whitetail harvest increased by nearly 9,000 from 2009. Bonus tags, antlerless-first mandates in some units, additional hunting opportunities, and $6 youth permits all contributed to the antlerless whitetail harvest.
Here are other highlights to the 2010 big game hunting seasons:
A record 141,573 deer permits were sold. The number of firearm permits sold increased while the number of archery and muzzleloader permits sold decreased from 2009.
Deer hunter success rates were 68 percent for firearm, 40 for archery and 37 for muzzleloader.
Electronic checking helped wildlife managers obtain harvest information faster. There were 25,000 deer checked via telephone or online.
The first year of the $6 youth deer permit was popular, with 11,255 permits sold.
[glow=red]Age structure of whitetails and mule deer bucks continues to improve. A record 75 percent of whitetail bucks and 83 percent of mule deer bucks taken were age 2 or older.[/glow]Record numbers of youth (11,255) and nonresident (15,300) permits were sold.
A record 166 elk were harvested – 77 bulls and 89 cows.
There were 793 antelope harvested, including 509 in the firearm season, 185 in the archery season and 99 in the muzzleloader season.
