Years ago 1 of the big 3 hunting mags had an article on how to set up a truck topper for camping. They made a bed over the wheel wells that was high enough to put coolers and the like underneath. Then used a thicker pad/mattress on that with a sleeping bag and pillow. Cooking was done on the tailgate witha portable Coleman stove. They just used their Coleman lantern turned down as low as it would stay safely lit. For heat for cold nights.
A 4"-6" foam mattress would work great. One of the small propane heaters available today should work great also. Just keep a window cracked abit.
My dream setup would be a selfmade small slide in one piece topper sized camper. Everything would just stay in there. Even all of my hunting gear during hunting season. If I needed the pick up for some thing else(like work). Just slide the camper out. Then slide back in for the weekend or longer hunt. I'd build a frame that would hook on the back. To put a tarp over for a dry place to cook. It is plenty mobile so you can move to different areas/counties. Should one place turn dead or that's just what's needed to hunt the best place for the current conditions. If your hunting county, state or national forests. You don't usually need to be in a campground.
This of course is a 1 person setup. If a buddy were to come along I'd just bring a small tent with.
