Indiana Public Land

Unread postby BA-IV » Tue Jul 05, 2016 3:34 am

Who hunts Indiana public or private and what's the deer herd like. I'm looking for answers you can't learn off the internet.

I hunt public in the northern half. Doing fine up there from what I have seen. Reserved hunt Big Oaks NWR had low deer numbers last year. That's about all I can help.

I've hunted some of the pubic in the northeastern part 10-15 years ago. It's close to my Michigan properties so I scout and shed hunt them every spring. They got hit by EHD in 2012. The #s seem to be lower than back then. The people I've talked to says southern Indiana hill country is the place to be. Mark twain national forest

Anytime before gun season opens. Open day of gun sounds a lot like a war movie. Some areas quite scary actually.

Did a diy public land hunt in southern Indiana last year the second week of November . Wanted to hunt the rut in wi the week before. Should have gone to Indiana the first week of Nov. the property I hunted had 13 bucks taken off of it the week before I was there and a 176" the end of October. I saw one shooter and a buddy hit one we couldn't find. Indiana could teach wi a lot about public land management. There was food plots and groomed trails everywhere. I spent about 300 bucks for the whole week including the tag.

We have a trip to Illinois planned but from all my research the pressure even during bow season is unreal in the Shawnee...just looking at other options or adding an option to our OOS hunt.

We ran into a fair number of guys but we still seen deer. The one thing that really stuck out to me was that since there was so many groomed trails guys were all going in deep. It took me about two days to figure out that all the deer were right up by the parking lots. That wasn't a national forest however.
