Put my Alligator app in today...

Unread postby Tufrthnails » Sat May 07, 2016 4:14 am

And so the process begins of remembering to put the rest of my quota applications in. It sure seems like this year is flying by.

Cool. 8-)
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I heard about that one a couple weeks ago. Really makes you scratch your head a little bit when you are chest deep coming off the river.

My wife won't let me hunt them. I've been on 3 gator hunts and taken 2. Fun enough, but we don't eat 'em and she doesn't want gator hide accessories.

We do see a few good sized ones where we duck hunt. Nothing huge, but solid 10 ft class, maybe more. They usually sound before I can get the tape measure out.

When I used to wade hunt the St Johns river - the gators come in to see what you are. Kind of un-nerving to have 3-4-5 gators sitting round, sizing you up. LOL!

That thing is huge! :o

Wolves don't bother me but having something like that around would be a tad bit unnerving!

That is extremely rare. I have seen plenty in the 10 - 12ft range. Lots of people drag me to places to see there gator that has to be 20ft and it turns out to be 9-10ft.

A 12 ft+ gator looks like a car parked on the edge of the water. We have a few that we won't wade near...dad calls one "Dragon" and he's about 12-14 ft. (I have kicked 8 ft gators out of the way and stepped on littler ones - nature of where we duck hunt - thankfully it is real cold at the time.)

Best one I ever saw was in a swamp and I was checking a duck hole. Gator got antsy about 75 yards away and had all of a 4 ft head - it re-positioned itself when it heard me walking. What a critter it was! I simply turned around and got out-of-dodge. Did not hunt there that year as the water was down and few places for the big ones to go.

It is humbling to be reminded that we are not the top of the apex of predators.

yeah they are not nearly as aggressive as people think until they get to about 10ft at that point I find they will hold their ground a bit more. Same rules apply as bears a fed gator is a dead gator. That is when they truly become dangerous.

Got most of the rest of my quotas applied for today. my desk is a serious mess of paperwork. My comp must have 30 pages open on it. Only got a couple more dates to pay attention to now. If you are a Florida hunter it is that time Phase I is open for app.

Thanks for the heads up. My wife was not a fan of adding a gator hunt and told me told pray about it, which I did and felt perfectly fine about going. Then I forgot to get the app in. Hmmmm, maybe she was on to something. Maybe I'll just go along with someone else and save $230.

Makes the hair on the back of you neck stand up just thinking about it. Especially when you are walking through the water alone and all is quiet.
