Anyone use Canoes?
Hello, I'm a new member this is my first post! Excited to find a place with other enthusiastic deer hunters. I've been successfully hunting public land for five seasons. For me that means tagging enough deer meat to last till next season. I'm am always researching and looking into new ways to be better. I ultimately want to have more chances to kill mature bucks, but that's another topic for later.
So anyone have any successful canoe hunts? My friend who piqued my interest in deer hunting public land was a huge advocate for using a boat. That first season we hunted together I lucked up and put a 2.5 year old 10 pt and a big doe in his john boat. (Both were gun kills but great under circumstances).
So I bought a big flat stern canoe late last summer and have used it a handful of times. I'm still working on how to make it work best for success. It has worked well to get across lakes quickly and quietly. That's where I have seen its best use, so far. If I can easily drop in at a boat ramp then take a seven minute boat ride 1/3 mi to the back of a lake and not be sweating to death or laying down human scent it's a bonus. I had to get it registered to be able to put troller on it, but it scoots across ponds. I have put on rivers several times but am limited to what I can do alone. Some of my friends aren't always available to go. And rivers can be dangerous going it alone, but also dealing with put ins and take outs seem like it's just easier to suck it up and walk the distance.
Anyone else on here using a boat to deer hunt? Any tips or success stories would be greatly appreciated!

Awesome pic zap. This pic made me smile. Big question, where would u put your deer if u made a kill? I was thinking on a tarp in the passenger seat with the seat belt on might be best!

Re: Anyone use Canoes?
We use canoes and a small 14' Jon boat all the time sinse we have river frontage on the South Fork Flambeau river . We have about 1 sq mi we have to ourselves even during gun season. I have only seen scouters back there one time and that was in 1994. I have not seen a hunter sinse 2009 and my BIL has seen 3 in 5 yrs and that was opening weekend of gun season. We get away from hunters and baiters this way. Here is a pic of my BIL just yesterday getting out of the canoe. ALso some pics why it cn be dangerous crossing. We figure is we fall in we are dead in some cases,,,, but hey,,,, theres a buck back in there and it drives us . WORKS FOR BEAR TOO! It is far easier to paddle and leave a fraction of the scent that to walk up a sweat. And then to drag a deer or bear.?? NOPE, not of this 51 yr old guy.

Welcome to the Beast!
Where does she sit, you ask? She doesn't need a seat. She's gotta push!
No disrespect intended Zap. You're the man. But I hope your car has a sweet name, like the buckmobile... :)

Bonecrusher,
depending on what kind of water you are planning on navigating you might want to consider a kayak. I use a kayak for a lot of the smaller creeks and rivers in my area and it is more efficient in my opinion than a canoe.

Re: Anyone use Canoes?
Czabs how long is your kayak? Is it a sit on top? Is it large enough to hold a bow, a climbing deer stand and a dead buck?

Re: Anyone use Canoes?
Bonecrusher, my kayak is 10.5 foot. Well I know i can for sure can carry my lone wolf sticks, hang on, camera, equipment, bow, and 100b doe strapped on the back
She's a little low riding with the doe but with the other gear your completely fine.
I think If i shot a big buck I would have to pull behind an otter sled or something.
It skims water nicely, can go over some real shallow stuff, It is also easier on the arms, and easier to cruise with the less weight.
I bought mine on a black friday deal fro like $180 so it isn't top of the line or anything. I have oval paddles and my buddy has square paddles. Square paddles work better for speed and ease of use. His kayak is also a lot nicer than mine and has better storage. Probably the higher in price you go the nicer they are going to get. I have the low end but it works for me.
Just another thing to think about before you stick money into it.

Re: Anyone use Canoes?
I bought and now use a Nucanoe to access small waterways. A little heavy 80 pounds, but I can easily haul out the biggest deer and can tread in 5 inches of water.
