well, I finally shot my first public land deer

Unread postby Bowhunting Brian » Mon Dec 08, 2014 2:12 am

I haven't made many threads for a while and am just dropping by to share that I finally shot my first public land deer. I used to hunt prime private land and shooting deer was easy (not big buck of course, but just deer for the freezer). public land was a challenge for me the last few years. I stumbled on this spot kind of by accident and hunted it archery season. I am all alone there, no one archery hunts it and my excitement for the sport has gotten to where it used to be since I now see deer and no hunters. (so I thought). I missed an 8 pointer with the bow, but shot a doe the Sunday of opening weekend. this land gets pounded with gun hunters I found out the hard way. the info I learned opening day from the gun hunters helped me decide where to set up on Sunday and it worked perfect. it's good to finally taste venison again and I am excited to get out soon and scout for next year. being of positive mind, next year I'm going to whack the 8 I missed this year. he will be 3 1/2 and have a nice rack. :D you guys had a part in helping me find this spot and get a shot and also shoot the doe. thanks beasts!

Way to go Brian.

Feels good when you step in the direction you intend to!

I have been having blips of my eureka moments since 2009 when I choose to only shoot 2.5 year olds+.
Last year was my best year seeing 4, plus a bear.
And even killing one of them.

This year has been focused on getting my 8.5 year old a deer, plus a new job with travel has limited my hunting time.
Today the gun season ends and 15th archery is over, it's not looking good w/ crusty snow covering the ground.
Jake wants one more hunt so next weekend is my only/last opportunity to get a kill - meat is now on my mind...
I say this because this is probably one of my worse years for seeing deer in a dozen years...
- That's hunting though and add few other priorities to fog up my efforts...

Good job.
