What state for a NON resident deer hunt?
Please reply with what state your from, and what state/s you would do an out of state public land hunt. I know some states are harder to get than others, so Id like to start getting points to get a tag one day. My knowledge is limited but is Iowa and Kansas tops? Gun or bow? I always feel more confident w gun like most, but here in MI, Ive had lots of bow opportunities and kills, not many with a gun. Im going to Ohio again this Jan but tags are over the counter there.

BTW I'm all about monster bucks, but the experience is really what Im after (I think). Scenery, terrain, I don't know just random thoughts. I sure don't want to do this for an average 100" buck put it that way.

I think you are close. I'd go Iowa, Kansas, or Missouri...or anything remotely close to SE IA.

I will throw in Western IL... but tag is roughly $500 and access might not be easy

Re: What state for a NON resident deer hunt?
Northern michigan if the scenery and trip are more important than the kill. Funny you mention 100" buck, haven't killed one of those in Mi with 32yrs of hunting here. If your going out of state, start collecting Iowa points this spring. Ohio is pounded by Michiganders, and I have been seeing Kansas mentioned on our MS site. Michigan guys are going to other states and shooting monsters by Michigan standards, but young deer by the locals standards in the states they are hunting. It's unfortunate, but is what it is. Other than Iowa, I'd look at Wisconsin, Nebraska, Dakotas, Missouri, Kentucky.
Case in point, hunter calls this a "heavy" 8. Congrats to him, but there's nothing heavy about that rack.

A coworker in Illinois took a 170" during gun season. Said his brother-in-law did too. Missouri has good management and a variety of terrain.

If I was gonna do a late season out of state gun hunt on public, it would be in Massachusetts.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

I was just reading up on Iowa last night... apparently it takes 3-4 years to get a non-resident bow tag there, and that's paying $50 every year you don't get one for preference points!

Usually 3 yrs at roughly $700 total cost for tag

Great scenery, low cost and big bucks. Southeast Ohio. I know it gets hunted hard but from what I've seen, not as hard as people say. Put in the work to make a couple scouting trips in late winter, early spring and you could be very well rewarded. Keep doing that trip until you get your Iowa points. That's my plan.

I wish more states would limit non residents like this. If you're serious about killing big bucks you have to go through these hurdles and hunt quality lands and areas that are conducive to growing and managing their deer herd.

I wish Wisconsin would go to one buck per year per hunter. I wish our gun season wasn't centered around the mating season. I wish the farmland areas were shotgun only. I wish we didn't have all these special slaughter hunts.
